Want to make an impact in your Hokie community?

Run for an elected position! Members of the Undergraduate Student Senate represent over 30,000 undergraduate students within the shared governance system, work on initiatives and legislative recommendations that support a positive and inclusive student experience and help disseminate a portion of the student activity fee to registered undergraduate student organization.

Fall Election Timeline

  • September 3-18: Applications are open
  • September 20: Eligibility checks
  • September 23-29: Campaigning and election week
    • *See the election rulebook for specific expectations and rules.
  • October 1:
    • Results are certified and made public
    • New Officers Take Power
    • *All candidates must be able to attend USS Senate Meetings on Tuesdays from 6:30-8 p.m.

Available Positions

Cabinet Positions

The VP for Shared Governance chairs the Commission for Undergraduate Student Affairs, coordinates undergraduate student appointments to university committees, and participates in the University Council.

Elected Senator Positions

Senators represent various constituencies, participate in Senate discussions and legislative actions, collaborate with USS Cabinet members, and serve on USS Committees and University Committees and Commissions.

Represent the general undergraduate student body. They focus on broader university issues, work on initiatives that impact all students, and engage with a variety of student groups and committees.

Represent specific colleges within the university. Their responsibilities include voicing the concerns and interests of their college's students, participating in relevant committees, and facilitating communication between their academic college and the USS.

Represent specific on-campus residential communities. Their responsibilities include regularly meeting with their constituents, voicing the concerns and interests of students who live in specific Residential Housing Districts and Living Learning Communities, and work on relevant initiatives that impact students that live on-campus.

There are 5 Residential Senators positions:

  • One representative for Residential Housing Districts 2, 3, and 4 on campus.
  • Two Living-Learning Community representatives.
    • One representative will have the constituency base of the Leadership and Social Change Residential College, Digerati, Galileo and Hypatia, Innovate, Lavender House, Moziako, Rhizome, Studio 72, Thrive, and Transfer Experience Living Learning Programs.
    • One representative will have the constituency base of the Honors Residential Commons, Residential College at West Ambler Johnston. Aurora, GenerationOne, Hillcrest, Impact, Meraki, Orion, Ujima, and VIA Living Learning Programs.
